Amazing fog at Mono Lake today...

As we headed north from Lone Pine, the clear air gave way to a thick
fog in the Mono Basin. Its perimeter was marked by hoar frost on every
plant; the tufa towers protruding from the lake were surreal below the
fog; and, once out of the fog, the view south to the edge of the
Sierra and the White Mountains was amazing. Normally, I hate the ice
fog, but this was pretty nice to see.

The Fog that Ate my Day

Here are six representations of the fog that ate my day. Note that there are a couple of missing pictures that would show how I diligently cleaned off my truck's windshield the night before only to find (at 6:30 AM) that a snow decollement had slid from the roof on to the windshield and converted to ice. Classic. Also at this time, Ice Fog had formed an invisible sheet of ice on the carefully shoveled driveway. I was only slightly riled. The 12 mile drive to the airport made things a little more interesting, but I was psyched to get to SF.

1. The map. How bad could it be?

2. The scene at the airport. A bit on the lonely side. At this point though, planes were still taking off. Pretty surreal watching them disappear within a few seconds of leaving the ground.

3. The Google Voice transcript. Not a bad transcription compared to some.

4. A surprise back in the parking log (i.e., the snow-covered ice rink of death). Yep, it seems the back of my truck was freed of an icy burden and popped open to reveal all of my field gear. Wonder if any would have been left on Thursday night...This was hilarious.

5. The view on the drive home. This is some shitty driving.

6. The fog in the valley (taken by friend who was circling the airport at the time). It is nice on top.

I had hoped to get to SF and forget about all of the year end shit I still had to do, but when trapped in the airport, it is pretty much all I could think about. I missed early registration at AGU, so I was not yet on the hook for that; my flight got cancelled; the hotel said they could cancel without a charge, etc. I went home. Leaving for Okla-freaking-homa on Sunday anyway. Hoping for better weather.
