Verde River mega-debris pile....Winter 1993

Set_a_01_062

This really is a large pile of flood debris, trust me. One day I may reveal the ridiculous story that surrounds the trip to this site; the loss and rediscovery of my camera; the woman at the Cave Creek, AZ grocery deli counter that adored me; and the anxiety on the part of my AZGS boss / field partner about that woman, her sandwiches, late night alien abductions, and asking for directions. Apologies if I have posted before...but it is one of my favorite photos. Sue me.

Exclusive Owyhee River lecture footage...and a note on UNR field camp.

Just found some mildly tedious footage that a pal secretly shot of me rambling on about lava, bad roads, and other stuff on an Owyhee River field trip in May, 2009. It was shot on a beautiful morning only a week or so before the rain-soaked 2009 UNR geologic field camp expedition to the same area.

I am sure my old field camp students will remember this guy all too well. On that note, I must confess that I have had to abandon my participation in the UNR field camp this summer...maybe for good. The job change makes it pretty hard to squeeze it in, and that is a shame. Honestly, teaching field camp was one of the true highlights of my career at UNR / NBMG.

I have memories of great fun, incredibly stupid student/TA/ professor behavior, lasting friendships, and truly epiphanic moments for myself and some (most?) of the students from each year's camp...from the early days (late 1990s) at Ruth, NV to the last two amazing years in Owyhee River country. Damn, I will miss that. Thanks to all of you.
